New Policy Brief analyses challenges for R&I connected to EU Climate Law

The new Policy Brief on the "European Climate Law" is published as part of the SUPEERA project, in the context of its documents identifying concrete Research and Innovation (R&I) challenges in the most recent EU policies. The Brief provides an analysis of the so-called "law of laws", setting up the goals for the EU to fight a changing climate in the near future. The goals of the Climate Law will require a massive effort from all of society's stakeholders, and energy R&I will play one of the main roles in the implementation of the law's provisions.

The policy brief explores the "Climate Law" through the lens of the energy R&I sector, guiding researchers through the main ways energy technology can help the EU achieve lower emissions, an environmental-friendly industrial sector and a better future for all its citizens.

Some of the key challenges identified are:

  • Research at all TRLs in line with climate goal
  • Develop necessary technology for efficient carbon capture, storage and removal processes
  • Advancements in HPC, modelling and AI to speed up new energy system components
  • Increase research on social aspects, including SSH topics in energy research
